About Linfield's Summer Academy

Starting a new academic experience can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. You might wonder what the expectations are, or how you will fit into your new setting. If your curious about how classes at Linfield will go, what are the faculty is like, and who your fellow classmates are, the Academy is our Pre-Orientation program focused on academic preparation, resource building, and network development.

Program Description

The Linfield Summer Academy is designed to help students transition into Linfield. The academy is focused on academic preparation while simulating what a typical week at Linfield could look and feel like. Not only do participants engage with staff and faculty in academic classes, but they also build a strong network of peers. The academy schedule has been developed in a way that balances both learning academic expectations with fun social activities. Students who participate in the academy will have a chance to get to know many faculty and staff and will have a strong set of resources at their fingertips right from day one.

Location: McMinnville campus of Linfield University

Dates: Monday, Aug. 5 – Friday, Aug. 9, 2024 

Students travel and arrive on Monday with a Welcome Session and Dinner that day. Academic programming over four days: Tuesday-Friday with closing event on Friday evening.

Housing & Meals

Students coming for the Academy will move directly into their assigned fall semester Residence Hall room. All meals will be provided during the Academy. At the conclusion of the academy, students should plan on returning home. Students traveling from afar may remain on campus until the start of their next scheduled program (for example: athletics or other Pre-Orientation program) with appropriate approval. Students interested in staying on campus after the academy should indicate their request on the registration form for the Linfield Summer Academy. Meals between official programs are not covered by Linfield and the student will need to pay for them.

  • What is the Linfield Summer Academy?

    The Linfield Summer Academy program provides students with faculty lead preparation in writing, communication, mathematics, scientific reasoning, and in additional topics of interest. Furthermore, student participants will engage and learn information regarding student support services, advising, and academic policies and procedures.  The Academy was created to help students transition to Linfield and to gain a better understanding the academic programs and culture before students begin their college experience. The academy is designed to simulate the rigors of a traditional week of university experience and includes participation in academic classes, with student support structures, and in social student-life activities.

  • How do I registration for the Academy?

    The Linfield Summer Academy is a Pre-Orientation program and as such students can complete the Pre-Orientation registration form in their Registration Portal and select the Academy as a choice. The Academy has limited spaces and so not all students who want to participate may be able to depending on demand.

  • How much does participating in the Academy cost?

    All Pre-Orientation programs have a $100 fee to participate. Space in the Linfield Summer Academy is limited.

  • When is the Linfield Summer Academy?

    The program of the Academic Academy will begin on Monday, August 5 at 3pm (PDT). Check-in for the Academy is from 10:00am-2:00pm that same day. At Check in, students will receive their room key, welcome packet, and additional information needed for the week.

    The Academy will conclude on Friday, August 9 around 7:30pm (PDT). Check out for the Academy will begin at the conclusion of the program with the expectation that all participants have moved off campus by 12:00pm on Saturday, August 10.

  • Can I stay on campus after the Academy is done?

    Generally, no. We expect that all students participating in the Academy will return home after the conclusion of the program.

    Students traveling from afar may be granted an exemption to remain on campus until the start of their next scheduled program (for example: athletics or other Pre-Orientation program) with prior approval. Students interested in staying on campus after the academy should indicate their request on the Registration Form. Meals between official programs are not covered by Linfield and the student will need to pay for them themselves.

  • What transportation options are there to get to the Academy?

    The student is responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Academy. Participants should make sure to plan their travel arrangements so that they can check in and out during the appropriate times. If a student is flying in for the Academy, a Linfield provided shuttle may be available if given advance notice of transportation plans and needs.

  • Will meals be provided during the Academy?

    Yes. The meals provided include Dinner on Monday, August 5, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner on Tuesday through Friday, and Breakfast on Saturday, August 10 as needed. Most of the meals during the Academy will be provided by Linfield University’s Dining Services operated by Sodexo.

    All participants will have the opportunity to eat at the McMinnville Farmer’s Market on Thursday, August 8 as part of the scheduled program of activities. Vouchers will be provided for purchasing food at the Market.

  • What does housing look like during the Academy?

    Students participating in the Academy will be housed in their assigned fall semester room. As such, students participating in the Academy may begin the move-in process as part of the program. However, students will be expected to vacate their housing at the conclusion of the Academy. Students are responsible for maintaining their living quarters in good condition and damage free. Additional information about the move-in process will be sent to students in July.

    Students who will be commuter students in the fall and do not have an assigned residence hall at Linfield will not be housed on campus and will need to commute daily to the Academy.

    Residential Assistants will be on campus during the Academy and available for questions as needed. If you have questions or concerns about housing arrangements, please indicate this on the Registration Form.

  • What if I have Accessibility and Accommodations needs?

    Reasonable accommodation will be made where possible based on need. This includes housing, meals, and the academic program. Please use the Registration Form to indicate whether you need accommodation or require additional information. A staff member from Learning Support Services will contact you directly to discuss your needs.

  • Do I need a computer?

    Yes. Student participants should plan to bring a laptop with them if they have one. The Linfield Library has a limited number of Laptops that can be borrowed. Students can indicate their need to borrow a laptop using the Registration Form in their admissions portal.

    Students are welcomed to bring their Phone and/or another Mobile Device. However, phones and devices should not be used as a substitute for doing work on a computer. Cellphones use should be kept at a minimum while participating in the Academy and not utilized during any of the programming unless directed to do so by the instructor(s).

    Students will be provided access to the internet during the Academy.

  • Will Student Health and Wellness be open?

    No. The Linfield University Student Health, Wellness & Counseling Center will not be open during the Academy. Any personal medical needs should be addressed prior to arriving at the Academy and planned accordingly. McMinnville has several medical facilities that can be utilized in case of an emergency, including Willamette Valley Medical Center.

  • What Physical and Recreational Activities Should I Expect?

    The Summer Academy offers a full schedule of activities including Wellbeing Activities for participants. These include Linfield trail walks, yoga, and a variety of other activities. In addition, the gymnasium, weight room, and other athletic facilities will be open to students participating in the Academy during certain hours. However, due to the fullness of the program and inclusion of wellness activities, there will not be many opportunities to “work-out” between 8am-8pm.
