Linfield University's Office of Veteran Affairs and Student Outreach

Emily Delo, the coordinator for Veterans Affairs (VA) and Student Outreach at Linfield University, knows how important VA benefits are for veterans, active-duty personnel, and their dependents when selecting a college. With firsthand experience navigating the VA, she serves as a valuable resource.

Emily said, “I personally benefited from VA benefits in college.”

"My father transferred his GI Bill to me, which included Chapter 33 and the Yellow Ribbon Program. So, I understand the challenges students face."

Emily's father served in the military until she reached high school, immersing her in the military lifestyle from a young age. She was even born at Madigan Medical Center on Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington.

She used her GI benefits at Western Oregon University, earning degrees in public policy and administration. While her experience with the VA was overwhelmingly positive, she recognizes that the same cannot be said for everyone.

“The ongoing joke, if you talk to someone who has recently dealt with the VA, is was it great or was it terrible? I’ve had a lot of great experiences and I’ve had some others that put me on hold for two hours before telling me that I called the wrong department.”

Linfield’s Yellow Ribbon Program for Dependents, Veterans and Active Duty.

Linfield is truly exceptional in the way that it deals with veteran benefits notably Chapter 33 and the Yellow Ribbon Program. Chapter 33 covers up to $27,120.05 in annual tuition for up to four years. When that limit is reached, the Yellow Ribbon Program fills the gap.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a benefit-matching initiative where the VA and the school equally share the cost. Although many schools set a low cap and restrict participation, Linfield stands out by virtually offering a full-ride scholarship with no restrictions on the number of students who can benefit.

Emily offers robust student support, meeting regularly with dependents, veterans and active-duty students to help them maximize their VA benefits.

Although she can't directly engage with the VA on a student's behalf, she provides crucial support and is working to develop educational materials to facilitate a smoother benefits process.

"For the majority of Yellow Ribbon-eligible students looking for a small-college environment, Linfield University stands as the best choice.”
