GLSP/LITR 375 Health and Humanity: Film and Medicine in Spain & Portugal

This interdisciplinary course invites you to explore questions of healthcare—illness, caregiving, and bodily autonomy—through the richly layered cultures of Spain and Portugal. Anchored in Spanish and Portuguese cinema, the course examines how cinema portrays key healthcare debates through the lens of everyday lives and ethical dilemmas. Students will gain firsthand insight into how cultural and historical contexts influence healthcare systems and social attitudes toward medicine, and how those systems and attitudes are reflected in art.

Our journey begins on campus with pre-departure film screenings and discussions. Then, on the ground in Spain and Portugal, we step into the world behind the screen—visiting hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers, and cultural landmarks; meeting with healthcare professionals and community members; and experiencing the local ways of thinking about health, healing, and humanity.

No prior knowledge of Spanish or film studies is required, and students seeking Spanish credit may complete coursework in Spanish. By the end of the course, you’ll not only have a deeper understanding of healthcare in the Iberian Peninsula, but also how art can reshape the ways we care for one another.

The course will depart from and return to PDX.

There will be 5-days of zoom instruction in June prior to departure. Students must have access to the internet and Blackboard during these 5-days. Housing will not be provided during this 5-day period.
