Learn about growing grapes in the heart of Oregon wine country
This seminar course is designed to introduce you to where and how grapes are grown. Understand grape varietals, their general biology and physiology, and the environmental factors required to grow them. Learn the basic aspects of vine growth development and training, trellis systems and vineyard management.
Course structure and information
Taught in a hybrid format, online readings and short assignments will prepare you for the intensive five-day field experience in Oregon wine country that follows.
- Online portion: July 29 – August 7
- Field experience: August 8 – 12, 9:00 a.m. - approximately 5 p.m.

During field experience, we will meet at vineyards throughout the area. Come prepared for outdoor weather with sturdy walking shoes and boots, hats, sunscreen, water bottles and lunch. You are required to provide your own transportation, bring masks, hand sanitizer and adhere to social-distancing guidelines.

If you are an admitted Linfield or other college student, this seminar may be taken for two credits as Introduction to Viticulture (WINE 211) at our Online and Continuing Education tuition rates. The total cost to take this course for academic credit is $710 ($250 per credit + $210 online course fee).

If you are not a Linfield student or seeking college credit, you may register for our non-credit option. The course fee is $470.
Payment plan available
The Tuition Management System (TMS) payment plan allows you to spread out the cost over two months for a small fee of $35 per enrollment.
