Veteran Affairs at Linfield

We are proud to support our veteran, active duty and military-affiliated students. Our Veteran Affairs office is here to assist you with educational benefits, connect you with campus support resources and help you navigate your academic journey. Whether you're starting college for the first time or continuing your education, we’re honored to serve those who have served.
  • Getting Started

    1. Apply and be admitted to Linfield:
      • Find the right application for the program that you are seeking and follow the instructions for that program. Linfield offers:
        • Graduate and undergraduate degrees on our McMinnville campus
        • Several Nursing degrees on our Portland campus, Online degrees, certificates, and education endorsements.
        • As well as simplified applications for returning students and those who may want to take courses without attaining a credential.
    2. Apply for Education Benefits through the VA. Application link:
      https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/
      • You will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA within 30 days of your application.
    3. Provide the COE letter to the Linfield Veteran Affairs office.
    4. Register for classes.
    5. Complete the Certification Request Form.
      • The Certification Request Form is written consent confirming the student authorizes Linfield to process their benefits. It is a Microsoft form that is sent to students and can also be found on the Veteran Affairs Central page (Linfield’s internal student website).
      • This form needs to be completed every semester to receive benefits and must match the student’s schedule.
    6. Benefits will be processed and submitted to the VA.
    7. Payment is sent by the VA within 30 days.
  • Different Types of Benefits

    Post 9/11 GI BILL (CH 33): Provides tuition assistance, a housing allowance, books and supplies stipend, and tutoring reimbursement. This benefit is for veterans who served on active duty after September 10, 2001. Benefits can be transferred to spouses and/or dependents.

    • Students who are 100% eligible can participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Linfield’s contribution limit is $99,999, and we do not have a limit on the number of students who can participate in the program.

    The Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) Program (CH 35): Provides a monthly tuition assistance stipend. This benefit is for the dependents of a Veteran who died, is captured or missing, or has a 100% disability rating.

    The Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Program (CH 31): Provides financial support for tuition and materials while the veteran is working towards a degree. This benefit is for veterans who did not receive a dishonorable discharge, and have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% from the VA. This benefit cannot be transferred to spouses and/or dependents.

    The Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) Program (CH 1606): Provides a monthly stipend to active-duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard. This benefit cannot be transferred to spouses and/or dependents.

  • Additional Financial Support

    Student Accounts: The Student Accounts Office is responsible for billing, posting, collecting, and depositing all funds due to the university while ensuring accuracy in compliance with university policy and all state and federal regulations.

    Financial aid: In addition to military programs and assistance, there are other forms of financial assistance. Our financial aid team can help.

    Student Health Wellness and Counseling Center: The SHWCC provides comprehensive health care, mental health care, and wellness services for Linfield students. Counseling services are free and fully confidential for students on the McMinnville and Portland campuses; medical services are available to McMinnville students. SHWCC also houses confidential advocacy services for survivors of relationship violence. Confidential advocates support survivors in understanding their options and finding needed support on and off campus.

    Learning Support Services: LSS coordinates academic, on-campus housing, on-campus dining, and mobility accommodations for students with permanent or temporary disabling conditions. We’re also here to support all students — including veterans — through our peer tutoring program and our professional academic coaching focused on skills like time management, organization, and study strategies.

Linfield University is authorized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to certify students who qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill® (Active Duty/Selected Reserves), Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program, Reserve Education Assistance Program, as well as those who qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, Yellow Ribbon and Vocational Rehabilitation.

The Military Affiliated Student Association (MASA): A student program under the Linfield Veteran Affairs Department. They host events once a semester, provide opportunities for students to connect and coordinate peer connection opportunities.
